Carmel, 2005
Photos from a quick trip down to the Carmel area, just before the end of 2005. These photos span two days: one spent on the coast from Big Sur to Point Lobos, and one at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Big Sur |
The weather was threatening to get stormy all day, so these are not great, but occasionally the storm clouds made for a bit of dramatic lighting...

Closeups |
Most of these are from a brief hike we took; the last two flower shots are, I confess, from the garden of the restaurant where we had lunch (Nepenthe; expensive but recommended).

Point Lobos |
A stunningly beautiful spot which I feel I failed to capture (and not for the first time, either). In my defense, it was completely overcast and close to rain at this point. The three sandstone photos have had their contrast and color enhanced a bit, contrary to my usual policy; I like them better this way, so what the heck.

Monterey Bay Aquarium: Jellies |
The exhibit of jellies at the MBA is stunning, particularly since being expanded recently. It's hard to photograph them because the light is so dim; I was pleased to get my first decent shot of several species on this visit, having tried many times before.

Monterey Bay Aquarium: Various |
Miscellaneous critters. The first photo is a close-up of the underside of a sea star, the next three are anemones, the spiny orange tube is a sea cucumber, and the remainder are left as an exercise for the reader.

Monterey Bay Aquarium: Birds |
The MBA has a nice aviary (if small) with a variety of waterbirds and shorebirds. The birds are acclimated to humans, which makes them easy to photograph without a terribly long lens, and it's neat to be so close to birds that are quite skittish in the wild.
