Japan 2004 Travelogue: Part 10

Sounkyo is a small village of onsen and hotels on the east side of Daisetsuzan National Park. It is nestled right into the bottom of the mountains, in a deep river gorge, and a cable car runs right from Sounkyo much of the way up to the top of the nearest mountain. We were hoping to use it as a base for a bit of alpine hiking, but there was too much snow on the ground, and we decided we were not sufficiently equipped and experienced. It was still a pretty spot, though.
These last ones are taken on the road towards the Shiretoko Peninsula, the last stop on our journey.
